The City of Ilagan, the capital of Isabela province, has a rich and vibrant history dating back to 1686, when it was established as a Spanish mission settlement. Originally called Bolo, the town was later renamed Ilagan, derived from the native word Nagali, meaning “to move upstream.” Ilagan became an important center of commerce and agriculture during the Spanish period, serving as a hub for trade between the Cagayan Valley and other parts of the Philippines.

In the American era, Ilagan continued to grow, introducing modern infrastructure and educational institutions. It played a role in the Philippine Revolution and World War II, witnessing battles and acts of resistance against Spanish, American, and Japanese forces. The resilience of its people shaped the city into what it is today—a dynamic and progressive community.

On August 11, 2012, Ilagan officially became a city after a successful plebiscite, marking a new chapter in its development. Since then, Ilagan has flourished as a major economic and cultural center in Northern Luzon.

Now a bustling first-class city, Ilagan continues to honor its history while embracing modernization. Its thriving agriculture, tourism, and business sectors make it a vital part of Northern Luzon’s growth. Despite progress, Ilagueños remain deeply connected to their roots, preserving their traditions and heritage for future generations.
